FMS freeze on loadup

Hello I have FMS version 2.0 alpha 8.3 windows 98 second edition directx 9.0 & a 64mb ddr2 nivdia geforce 4 mx440 vidio card, 512mb memory. When I click on FMS the FMS screen frame opens but the screen is black I get the hourglass icon & my machine freezes up. It then has to be reset or restarted FMS will not run. Why?. It will run on my XP laptop. I'm using Eskys simulator controler.
