Suggestion for simple implementation of gear/flaps up/down

I have downloaded several models which come in two versions - gear up and gear down. It is evident from flying characteristics that the flaps are also up/down in the two variants. Which gave me an idea - would it be possible to implement a keypress (or extra channel input) that switches instantly between the two models in flight? This would give a reasonable approximation to retracts and flaps without a major amount of programming, wouldn't it?

PS has Open Source been considered for faster development?
