Well, you could test the pins with a multimeter to try and find ground. Then if you don't have an oscilliscope you can download this one.
You have to make a probe with a hacked up audio cable (I used a microphone cable because it is mono) and plug it into the microphone port on your sound card.. Make sure to test with mutimeter first so you don't probe something over 15-20 volts and fry your sound card.
Just look for a wave that looks something like this.
If you find a similar wave make sure you have the correct one by moving the sticks.. The distance between peaks should get smaller as you move both stick to the bottom right and larger as you move both sticks to the top left (or vice versa)
