Strange Crash of FMS 2.85

Postby Jürgen N. » Wed Mar 09, 2005 5:30 pm

The longer the more often FMS 2.85 "crashes".
Not really, the sound remains, but the image disappears and a screen like this appears in the lower left corner:

FMS can be closed only by TaskManager.
Before I supply many details or data:
is this a known problem?
Many thanks advanced!
Kind regards from Switzerland
Jürgen

Jürgen N.,

I have not heard of this problem before.

Run DXDIAG and provide the information from the first screen. That will give us CPU, memory & type of graphic card too.

Could you also provide the DXDIAG of the Display Device.

Did you also check your BIOS to see if you had a serial port enabled?

Jürgen N.,

I don't see anything wrong with your machine or adapter card.

Please enable a COM port on your computer. This is a known problem with the software library FMS uses for handling the COM ports. It expects to see at least one or it crashes.

Newer computers don't always need a COM port so many machines have the COM ports disabled. If yours does, it will crash with FMS 2.8.

You can check for COM ports by right-clicking the [My Computer] icon, selecting <Manage> and then selecting <Device Manager>. There's a section called POrts (COM & LPT). Click on the [+] key to list the ports.

I have to disappoint you.
COM1 is ready and OK:

"Das Gerät ist betriebsbereit."
Wenn Probleme mit diesem Gerät auftreten, klicken Sie auf "Problembehandlung".

I use it (very seldom) for to save my transmitter (Multiplex MC3030) to the PC. No problems.
In the meantime I got a message from an other fellow in Germany who encounters the same problem. So at least I am not allone...

Question: what is the intended way to get in and out of this "Fullscreen-Mode"? After changing the resolution I'm automatically "in". Is this intended?
Kind regards
Jürgen

My video behaves poorly too if I run in full screen mode. The screen goes completely black for a few seconds and then finally syncs up and shows me the screen. Try running in Window mode instead and see if it changes a bit. I always run in window mode as a personal preference.

Thank you.
But there is one big problem:
in "Window Mode" I have only 1 resolution! A rather low one:
I select a higher resolution.
I get this (higher) resolution in "Full Screen Mode".
No control is active except "Esc" (no F12!).
"Esc" brings back the old and only resolution.
So how to change resolution and remain in "Window Mode"????
Kind regards
Jürgen

I completely forgot to tell that the problem is solved:
it was the screensaver!
It killed FMS whe the flight was to long.
Since I set it to 15 minutes (or press I, W or R intermittendly) no more problems.
Kind regards
Jürgen
