2 FPS-My System Not Good Enough - Slow

Postby JimS » Sun Mar 24, 2002 5:36 pm

I have an NEC, with Windows98, 64 RAM, 450 MHz AMDK-6 3Dprocessor, with DirectX6.1a.

I'm only getting 2 frames per second. Does that seem right? Would getting a newer version of DirectX make a real difference?

Thanks,

Jim

the most important thing in your case is how much video ram u have? if u r less than 32 mb and running at max resolution, i dont think upgrading directx will make an enormous diffrence.

with my older machine i used to reduce resolution and widow colors to 16 bit, which helped.

to find out about how much video ram.
try

Start--->settings--->control panel--->diplay--->settings------->advanced--->adapter

u could also try turning off 'smooth texture' in fms in the meantime.

I doubt the low FPS is because your machine is slow.

There are a number of issues with the graphics of FMS based on your exact graphic card/direct x/driver combination.

I get 2 FPS when running under win2k or winxp but +30fps running on the same hardware under win98.

On the home page is a link to a development version which allows you to tweak some of the graphics options of FMS. Its worth giving it a try. Also there are debug versions of FMS that seem to work better on some machines.

In my case the debug version sort of fixed the FPS problem but the graphics rendering deteriorated.

The development version did not help me.

Try these versions before and after upgrading direct x. Also check for newer drivers for your graphics card.

Good luck

Is it possible the video card is not hardware accelerated?

also try running the dxdiag utility and tweak the hardware accelaration options there. This will at least tell you if the hardware acceleration options are working for your card.

I changed the graphics setting and got it up to 8-22 fps. Much better. I really don't care too much about the graphics, so I can live with that. I'll try some more tweaking.
