Windows2000 crash - FMS old and new version problem on W2K

I've been using FMS for some time now, always on Win98SE. Not had any real problems.
I'm helping out a friend by making him an interface and installing FMS on his Win2000 equiped Toshiba laptop (Sat Pro 4600).
I ran into trouble.....

FMS installs properly but when run it actually crashes W2K completely (needing a full reboot). This happens at about the point the 'World Scene' would come up on the screen (e.g. I get the window frame and sound starts).

Tried the old Beta 7 version as well as alpha 8. Tried updating DirectX to the latest version 9. No change.

I have a very similar problem with Windows XP. I have a good video card, system, etc...

Every time the scene & model loads, the screen goes black, I hear a small bit of sound, and then the system reboots!

I discovered that I can get it to work if I run it in 256 colors... So it's as though it's not compatible with my display driver, but my graphics card / drivers are all new!

I am running win xp pro and i have exactly the same trouble: the sim crash and i get the horrible bleu screen which only let you reboot your computer.

If someone know how to fix such a trouble, please help us ???

Ok problem can be fixed by installing the ATI driver 4.7 version. Only if u run on an ATI videocard like Radeon of course.
