fms.exe fails to start
both versions beta 7 and 8.5
6.0 works fine

maybe the following informations are helpful for the developers.

im using XP pro, AMD with VIA chipset

this is what goes wrong:

i have this problem only with the new alpha 8.5. 7 was fine for me.

win xp pro, dell laptop, radeon x700 256mb , intel chipset., 1g ram......

there has been a similar problem with FMS 2.0 Alpha 8.3, but we didn't find a solution at that time.

what is the com-port/serial port configuration on your systems? how does your registry look like, regarding the keys in the above-mentioned thread?

my COM ports are disabled in the BIOS

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM does not exist in my registry

does enabling the com ports in the bios solve the problem?

i'll have to fix it for systems without com-ports as well, but just to know wether this is the problem.

i installed /Device/Serial{0,1} and now beta 8.5 works!
but 7.5 unfortunately still doesnt. So this has to be a different issue, but i have absolutely no idea why it still crashes.
however, if there is any way i can help you to debug it, let me know.
