COM ports limited in XP? Only 1 to 4 - Prob with serial to USB

Serial to USB converters sometimes take COM ports 5, 6 in the system.
This is ok with FMS under Win 98: these ports are available.
But under Win XP, it seems that only COM 1 to 4 are available to FMS. Other softwares can access COM 5 and above.

I had the prob testing my JOYSTICK software that adds trim, expo, travel limits, a.s.o. to the joystick input, like on a real RC transmitter.
The config was: USB, USB to serial, null modem cable, serial to USB.

it is very good possible that the FMS can use only the first 4 com ports on windows xp systems. The comport enumeration function of the TComPort Delphi component seems not to handle all serial port configurations on windows xp systems correctly. Unfortunately the TComPort component that we use for the serialport communication in the FMS is not further developed. This means that i will have to fix that routine myself one day .

Sorry to give you additional work. I know it's easy to ask, but it takes a lot of time and work to respond.
This requirement is not urgent (IMO. Of course, if you get a lot of same requests tomorrow, the priority could change).
