add direction indicator

After I've flying for awhile I have no idea which direction I'm facing while watching the plane. It makes it hard to land on the runway if I don;t know where it is! Could some sort of optional direction indicator be added to a corner of the screen?

It all depends on the landscape. In the reality also, if you loose your ground waypoints, you must rely on instruments.
Just a preliminary remark:
FMS is intended for RC simulation, so the normal view is from the ground. Following the plane is already a "variant".
If you need orientation info, select a landscape that makes orientation easier, and learn the waypoints you can use: mountains, roads, remarkable details...

When doing the contest, participants were told to identify different points in the landscape to make faster movements (the time was limited, and points were earned by putting the shadow of the plane on ground targets.

Guess the problem is ambient sound and peripheral vision which helps you to keep track of where you are looking, quite often the subconscious perception of the wind on your face does this. All of it is quite impossible in a flight sim, how good it may be.
