multiple windows - different views at the same time

I was wondering if there would be a way to open 2 windows at the same time: a main window that shows the landscape and a smaller that zooms on the plane? I think that may be the best way to know where the plane is in reference to the runway and surrounding objects while keeping an eye on the plane itself and not lose it in the distance.
I tried with version 8 but could not get it to work (maybe I did something wrong?)
