Transistors - Which is which?

I ordered my transistors from radio shack.. how do I know which is which and what side is 1 or 2 in the diagram.. Also in the diagram the pins are numbered wrong.. Do I hook it up using the pin numbers shown or the positions shown??

You know which is which from the numbers on them. For the rest it might help if you say exactly which circuit diagram you are trying to build from and why you think the numbers are wrong.

I figured out the transistor thing.. and the D connecter numbering thing (I'm so used to looking at it from the outside It just threw me to see it reversed) I built the circuit and it isn't working. (Note: this is after I already bought a Paralell cable and that didn't work, returned it for a serial cable (the one resistor type) and that didn't work.) I've tested all the connections with a mutimeter (both to make sure the connections are good and make sure there aren't any connections there shouldn't be) and everything appears fine... Is it possible to fry the transistors by getting them too hot while sauldering? Other than that I don't have any idea whats wrong.

I am making this circuit

I think I may have found the problem... By testing with the multimeter I found that there is NO connection between any of the prongs on the first transistor in the circuit (BC547 in the diagram) But in the second transistor there is 8.75KOhm constant resistance between 1&2, A 19MOhm inital Reistance between 1 & 3 and 2 & 3(the resistance slowly goes down)

Anyone have any ideas?

Ok.. Nevermind the while resistance babble.. After looking at the circuit I noticed it was measuering the resistors and it has nothing to do with the transistors. So.. When I get a chance I will apply voltage to the circuit and check out the current throught he transistors.
