Gamepad problems

I just downloaded this program for my father. While trying to configure the joystick, I ran into a problem. Only the rudder and the elevator would work. Nothing else would. It would take off, fly a little (controlling the up and down) and then pull to one side. We couldn't get it to change direction. It would eventually turn onto it's side and fly in a circle until we gave up and let it hit the ground. I have a Gravis GamePad Pro and Microsoft XP. Is there anything we can do to fix it? I really don't know much about hardware so finding an answer on my own has been tough. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.
