Can anybody give me an overview of how the joystick interface through the sound card works?
Specifically, does FMS contain a driver implementation all its own? Is it a proprietary implementation? Does this joystick scheme relate at all to the way ordinary IBM joysticks work? Does FMS leverage any Windows joystick support? Can other games read my radio as a joystick when it's plugged in to the sound card's line in? (I'll bet not...)

The idea is to re-write the DLL that deals with the joystick (winmm.dll) and force FMS.EXE to link to it rather than to the original DLL by putting the new DLL in the FMS directory.
Luckily, only very few interface functions have to be re-written, while the rest simply pass the FMS calls to the original DLL.
I conclude that you can use this DLL for any application that uses ONE joystick by copying the DLL to its folder.
There are some limitations however - Only 4 coding technics are supported (JR/Futaba * PPM/PCM) and up to 6 channels.
