An interesting aircraft.

An interesting aircraft.

I've always liked experimental aircraft such as the ones you see over at the Luft 46 site. While doing some Googling, I stumbled onto this aircraft which I'd never seen before. It's the Rescue Aerodyne designed by Alexander Lippisch. It's kind of cute looking, isn't it? Looks like a child's toy.

It uses counter-rotating props to cancel out counter-torque. It moves forward and back using movable vanes to direct thrust. To turn, I would imagine it just varies the speed of one of the props to make use of the natural tendency to counter-torque.

As far as I can tell no prototype was ever built, so there's really no data as far as weight, hp, and thrust. But it would make an interesting project for a model builder here. I'll probably build a hi-res 3d model of it. But I don't have any experience bulding low-res models.
