um - thats not really true...
Metasequoia does handle more than one bmp-file as well as FMS.
But you can only use one BMP per Material. But by defining some more metarials you can use as many BMPs as you want.
Metasequoia can also handle BMPs larger than 256x256 pixels. E.g. most of my models use BMPs with 512x512 pixels.
In the options you can also define wich max resolution of the textures should be used for preview within Meta.'s 3D-view panel (default is 256x256).
I think the only limitation is that the BMPs must have the same width and height (square) and FMS will have trouble with high resolution textures.... (slowes down).
