Futaba controller stopped working after windows update.

I'm using a Futaba controller plugged in to a usb cable with the MHW driver and FMS 8.5A.
Everything has worked fine up until last month around Oct 28th, windows XP automatically updated itself with two patches: kb904942 and kb914440.
Since that time, the joystick seems fine as far as windows is concerned, even calibration within game controllers in the control panel responds normally, however, FMS no longer gets any of the inputs from the controller. When I try to map the axis in FMS, moving the stick on any of the axis has no effect inside the mapping / calibration menu. They all just stay still. I tried uninstalling the 2 patches listed above, but this didn't fix it. I did do a system restore back to Oct 27th and things started work fine.
So is there any knowledge of what got broken with these updates and perhaps how to fix it?
