I use a USB lead, which I recently bought from Ken Hewitt.
It was instantly recognised by Win XP and works well. Can also be used with other RC Sims too.

ThermalQuest:

For XP you have the choices of Joystick (gameport), PIC-Serial, or USB. My personal choice is PIC Serial (lower cost than USB); however, USB is the way to go if you have a laptop. If you're in Europe, check out Ken Hewitt's interfaces. If you're in US, have a look at mine.
