Parallel, serial ports and Win XP - Advice needed on how to connect a TX

Hi

I'm new to this program, I just bought a JR XF631 and it came with a parallel cable. The guy that sold it to me told me that it wouldn't work under XP and he's right. Compatability mode doesn't work either :-(

I'd like to build a serial cable. But I don't have the pinouts. Can I just cut the parallel port off my cable and wire a serial DB9? Or is it more complicated than that? What are the pinouts used?

Can a serial cable connect to a transmitter at all?
