What are these files for?

New Flyer Here....I was looking through some files I d/l...Could some one tell me what a MOD and PAR files are...what they do...and what program makes them? I just purchased FSDS in hopes of adding some planes. While Im at it...Any good sources for Navy ships besides FMS-Shipyards? Thanks to all
